Department of Training

yThe GERMS Department of Training sponsors an DC EMT-B certification class each semester, as well as a DC EMT-B re-certification class. They both consist of two parts: class lecture and practical skill sessions. At the end of both courses, the DC written and practical exams for certification or recertification are given. In addition, we offer students the opportunity to take the NREMT exam, which offers national certification. The EMT-B certification class is open to both students and non-students, though the selection process is competitive. The EMT-B recertification course is limited to GERMS members and GERMS alumni.

EMT-B Certification Class - Fall 2008

The next EMT-B certification class will be starting in Fall 2008. Registration information and applications will be provided at the information sessions at the start of the semester in August.
Information Sessions
The next EMT-B certification class will be starting the first week of September. Registration information and applications will be provided at the following information sessions:

Wednesday, August 27th, 9pm
Thursday, August 28th, 9pm
Friday, August 29th, 9pm
Interviews:
Short, noncompetitive 15 minute interviews are required of all applicants as a way of putting a face with the application. This is an ideal time to ask questions about the program. Interviews will be held on Saturday August 30 starting at 9am and running through the afternoon. Sign up for interviews will take place at the information sessions.
Competitiveness:
In recent semesters, the popularity of the GERMS program and of the training class has grown exponentially. Unfortunately, there are natural limits placed on both the size of our membership due to the number of shifts in a week and on the number of individuals who can train in a given semester due to the nature of the subject material and our current resources.
Our EMT-B initial class has a 35 student cap. Several of these seats are reserved for individuals who do not plan on riding with GERMS post training (this is strictly adhered to). Our goal, however, is that everyone who wishes to ride with GERMS and take the class here will eventually be able to do so. Several seats are therefore held each semester for individuals who are reapplying for the class to help in this pursuit. While we are unsure how many individuals will apply for the spring class, 80 applications were received for the Fall 2007 class of 35.
CPR Certification for Healthcare Providers
Prior to the start of the EMT-B course, all participants must successfully complete this CPR course. Training and testing will be provided prior to the start of the EMT-B class on the following dates:

Tuesday, September 2: HIPAA Training
Wednesday, September 3 OR Thursday, September 4: CPR Training
Saturday, September 6: CPR Testing
The Fall 2008 rates have not yet been determined.
The Spring 2008 rates for the EMT-B certification course are as follows:
Georgetown University Students: $600
Georgetown-affiliated Persons: $700
All Others: $800
